Type 3A Hair: High Density, High Porosity – Your Complete Growth Guide

Type 3A Hair

High Density · High Porosity

Type 3A curls form large, defined ringlets with a lot of natural movement. High density means you have a generous amount of strands and your hair looks very full. High porosity means your cuticle has raised areas or gaps, so moisture enters fast but also escapes fast. This combination gives you impressive volume but the hair can feel dry, frizzy, and difficult to keep moisturised. The sheer amount of hair also means any dryness is amplified across thousands of strands. The priority here is sealing moisture in effectively and keeping the hair strong enough to hold its length as it grows.

How to Grow Your Hair

The LOC method is your foundation

High porosity hair needs moisture to be locked in immediately after it is applied or it simply evaporates. The LOC method applies a Liquid first, then a cream or Oil, then seals with a heavier Cream or butter. Some people prefer LCO. Either way, the layering is what makes the difference. Apply everything section by section through high density hair so every strand gets treated, and use heavier sealants like shea butter, castor oil, or avocado oil to close the cuticle effectively.

Protein every two to three weeks

High porosity hair has structural gaps in the cuticle that protein fills in temporarily. This makes the strand stronger, reduces breakage, and helps it hold moisture longer between wash days. With high density hair, you will use more product so buy in generous sizes. Alternate protein and moisture treatments rather than doing both on the same day. Hydrolysed keratin, silk, and egg proteins all work well.

Cool rinses after every wash

Hot water is damaging for high porosity hair because it opens the already raised cuticle even further. Always end your wash with a cool water rinse to help close the cuticle, reduce frizz, and add shine. It makes a visible difference especially on 3A curl patterns where definition comes from a smooth, closed cuticle.

Gentle handling throughout

High porosity hair breaks more readily than other types, and with high density, breakage across many strands adds up quickly. Detangle only on wash day when your hair is saturated with conditioner. Work section by section from ends to roots with a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. Limit heat styling and always use a heat protectant and low temperature settings when you do.

Scalp massages keep growth steady

Your high density is an asset for growth. Keep it that way with consistent scalp massages using castor oil or a rosemary-infused growth blend. Divide the scalp into sections and work through each one so you cover the whole head. Five minutes three to four times a week, done consistently over months, delivers real visible results in both growth rate and strand strength.

Nightly protection is non-negotiable

High porosity hair loses moisture aggressively overnight, and high density hair creates significant friction against fabrics. A large satin bonnet is the best solution for this combination because it contains all the volume and fully encloses the hair. Pineapple your 3A curls at the crown with your Froband before covering them. You will wake up with preserved curl pattern and far less frizz than without protection.

Products: What Works and What Does Not

Look for these

Castor oil, shea butter, avocado oil, hydrolysed keratin and silk, rich leave-ins, aloe vera, glycerin, heavy sealants, deep conditioners with slip

Avoid these

Light oils used alone, hot water rinses, heat without protectant, alcohol-based products, skipping protein, applying products without sectioning

Your Weekly Routine at a Glance

Wash Day

Shampoo gently in sections, deep condition 20 to 30 minutes, apply leave-in section by section, layer cream then seal with heavier oil or butter, cool rinse, diffuse on low or air dry.
