Type 4A Hair: Low Density, High Porosity – Your Complete Growth Guide

Type 4A Hair

Low Density · High Porosity

Your 4A coils are tight, springy and full of potential. When they are properly hydrated they bounce and shine in a way that turns heads. High porosity is your biggest challenge. Your cuticle is raised and sometimes damaged, which means moisture floods in quickly but escapes just as fast. Dryness can creep in within hours of washing if you do not seal properly. With low density on top of that, you want to be protecting every strand you have from breakage and keeping each one as moisturised and strong as possible. The right routine makes an enormous difference here.

How to Grow Your Hair

Seal moisture in right after every wash

High porosity hair absorbs moisture fast but loses it just as quickly. You need to seal the strand while it is still wet so the moisture cannot escape. The LOC method works really well here. Apply your leave-in first, then a lightweight oil like argan or jojoba to create a seal, then a curl cream to lock everything in place. Do this while your hair is still dripping and you will feel the difference in softness and moisture retention straight away.

Use protein treatments to strengthen the strand

High porosity often means the cuticle has gaps in it, whether from heat damage, colour or just genetics. Protein helps fill those gaps temporarily and reduces how fast moisture escapes. A light protein treatment every three to four weeks works well. Rice water rinses are an easy starting point. Always follow protein with a deep conditioning session because 4A coils treated with protein alone can become stiff and brittle, especially at low density.

Deep condition every single wash day

High porosity 4A hair is constantly losing moisture to the air around it. Deep conditioning once a week is not optional for you, it is a necessity. Use a rich conditioner with ingredients like shea butter, avocado or honey and leave it on for at least 20 to 30 minutes under a warm cap. The warmth helps it absorb more deeply. On low density hair dryness shows as frizzy, shapeless coils so this step is what keeps your hair looking and feeling its best all week.

Scalp massages a few times a week

When density is low every follicle counts. Massaging your scalp with a nourishing oil like castor, jojoba or grapeseed three or four times a week gets blood moving to each follicle and encourages steady growth. Spend five minutes using the pads of your fingers in circular motions. It is a small investment of time but it pays off over months. Do not stop because you cannot see results immediately. The growth is happening underneath.

Handle your hair with real gentleness

High porosity coils have a rougher cuticle surface which creates more friction between strands and more opportunities for breakage. On low density hair you will notice every strand that snaps. Detangle only on wash day when your hair is fully loaded with conditioner, working from ends up to roots one section at a time. Never pull through dry 4A coils. Trim every six to eight weeks to cut off weak ends before they break higher up the strand.

Protect your hair day and night

High porosity hair loses moisture to everything around it including the air, your pillow and your own hands. Pineapple your coils loosely at the crown with your Froband every night before bed. Sleep on satin. During the day try to leave your hair alone as much as possible. Every time you touch and restyle dry high porosity coils you are roughing up an already raised cuticle and losing more moisture than you need to.

Products: What Works and What Does Not

Look for these

Rice water, protein-enriched conditioners, shea butter, avocado oil, castor oil, argan oil, LOC method products, honey, glycerin, rich deep conditioners

Avoid these

Alcohol-based products, frequent sulphate washing, skipping your sealant step, excessive heat styling, skipping protein treatments, touching or restyling dry coils

Your Weekly Routine at a Glance

Wash Day

Co-wash or gentle shampoo. Deep condition under a warm cap for 20 to 30 minutes. Apply leave-in, seal with oil, lock in with curl cream using the LOC method. Diffuse on low or air dry.

Mid-Week Refresh

Mist generously with water. Scrunch in a small amount of leave-in or aloe vera. Seal lightly with oil and re-secure with your Froband.

Every Night

Pineapple loosely with your Froband and sleep on satin. This slows moisture loss overnight and keeps your coil pattern intact.
