Type 4A Hair Medium Density Low Porosity Your Complete Growth Guide

Type 4A Hair

Medium Density · Low Porosity

Type 4A curls are tight, springy coils with a consistent S-pattern that carry energy and definition when properly cared for. Medium density gives you a full, satisfying head of hair with enough strands to create real volume and presence. Low porosity is the main challenge here, and your cuticle sits tightly closed, resisting moisture and causing products to pool on the surface rather than absorbing. Once you learn how to open that cuticle and get moisture in, your 4A coils will reward you with bounce, definition, and serious growth.

How to Grow Your Hair

Heat is essential on wash day

Low porosity 4A hair will not absorb moisture without warmth to open the cuticle first. Every wash day, apply your deep conditioner to warm, freshly washed hair in sections and sit under a hooded dryer or steam cap for 20 minutes minimum. The warmth lifts the cuticle just enough to let water and conditioner penetrate the strand where it is actually needed. Without this step, everything you apply just sits on top and gets wiped away.

Light, water-based products only

Low porosity 4A coils cannot absorb heavy products. Thick butters and creams coat the strand without penetrating, leading to build-up that blocks the follicle and weighs down your medium density hair. Stick to water-based leave-ins, lightweight curl milks, and aloe vera gels. Apply everything to soaking wet hair immediately after washing so water acts as a carrier to draw product into the strand before the cuticle closes again.

Clarify regularly to keep follicles clear

Low porosity hair accumulates product residue more than any other type because products cannot get in and instead collect on the surface. With medium density there is even more hair surface for build-up to cling to. Clarify every two to three weeks with a gentle sulphate shampoo, then immediately deep condition under heat. Think of clarifying as resetting your hair so that every product you use afterwards actually has a chance to work.

Scalp massages accelerate growth

Your medium density gives you a solid foundation and scalp massages help you build on it. Three to four times a week, massage your scalp for five minutes with a light oil like jojoba or grapeseed using the pads of your fingers in small circular motions. This increases blood flow to the follicle and signals the body to prioritise hair growth. The effects are cumulative and three months of consistent massages produce results that are genuinely visible.

Detangle only on wash day with conditioner

4A coils knot and interlock easily, especially with medium density where strands have more neighbours to tangle with. Only detangle when your hair is fully saturated with conditioner on wash day, working from ends to roots in small sections. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers and take your time. Rushing causes breakage. Trim every eight to ten weeks to keep splits from travelling up the strand and creating more tangling.

Protect your coils every night

Low porosity hair holds onto moisture well once it is inside the strand, but overnight cotton friction still disrupts your 4A coil pattern and causes frizz. Pineapple your medium density coils loosely at the crown with your Froband before bed to preserve volume and definition overnight. Sleep on a satin pillowcase or use a satin bonnet to reduce friction and wake up with your curl pattern largely intact.

Products: What Works and What Does Not

Look for these

Aloe vera juice, glycerin, rice water, green tea rinses, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, water-based leave-ins, lightweight curl milks, humectant-rich products

Avoid these

Heavy shea butter applied alone, thick creams, silicones, mineral oil, cold product application, skipping heat on wash day, skipping clarifying every few weeks

Your Weekly Routine at a Glance

Wash Day

Clarify every two to three weeks, deep condition under heat in sections for 20 minutes, apply lightweight water-based leave-in to soaking wet hair, scrunch in curl gel, diffuse on low or air dry.

Mid-Week Refresh

Mist with aloe vera water or a water-glycerin mix, scrunch to reactivate coils, re-secure with your Froband and air dry.

Every Night

Pineapple loosely at the crown with your Froband and sleep on satin to preserve your coil pattern and moisture through the night.
