Type 4A Hair
Low Density · Low Porosity
Your 4A coils are tight and springy with a beautiful S-pattern that bounces when your hair is thriving. The coil is small and tightly wound, which makes it harder for your scalp's natural oils to travel down the strand. That's where dryness usually starts. Low density means you have fewer strands on your scalp, so every one of them matters more. Low porosity adds another layer to manage: your cuticle is sealed tight, and moisture finds it very hard to get inside the hair shaft at all. Products tend to sit on top of your strands instead of sinking in. It can feel frustrating, but once you understand what your hair actually needs, everything changes.

How to Grow Your Hair
Warm your hair before you add anything to it
Low porosity hair needs heat to open up. The cuticle is naturally closed and moisture simply bounces off when the hair is cold. On wash day, apply your deep conditioner to warm freshly washed hair and sit under a hooded dryer or steam cap for at least 20 minutes. This is the single most important thing you can do for your hair. Without warmth, even the best conditioner in the world will not get inside the strand.
Go light with your products
Heavy butters and thick creams are not made for your hair type. They cannot get through a low porosity cuticle so they pile up on the surface instead. On low density hair that build-up reaches your scalp fast and can start to clog your follicles. Use water-based leave-ins, lightweight curl milks and aloe vera gels. Always apply to soaking wet hair so the water helps pull the product in before the cuticle closes back up.
Clarify every few weeks and mean it
Product residue clings to low porosity strands stubbornly. You might not see it but it is there, sitting between the product and the hair, blocking moisture from getting in. Clarify with a gentle sulphate shampoo every two to three weeks and follow it immediately with deep conditioning under heat. Think of it as a reset. Everything you do after a clarify will actually work because there is nothing in the way.
Massage your scalp a few times a week
With low density every follicle carries more responsibility. Getting blood flowing to each one regularly makes a real difference to how much your hair grows and how strong each strand comes in. Use the pads of your fingers with a light oil like jojoba or grapeseed and spend five minutes in slow circular motions three or four times a week. The results are not instant but after a few months you will see them clearly.
Be patient and gentle when you detangle
4A coils catch on each other. On low density hair every strand you lose to a rushed detangle shows. Only work through your hair on wash day when it is completely saturated with conditioner, going from ends up to roots one section at a time. Use your fingers or a wide tooth comb and take your time. Trim every eight to ten weeks so split ends do not travel further up the strand and cause more breakage.
Protect your hair every single night
Cotton pulls moisture straight out of your coils while you sleep and roughing up the cuticle at night undoes a lot of your wash day work. Pineapple your hair loosely at the crown with your Froband before bed to keep the shape and volume you built. Lay a satin bonnet over it or switch to a satin pillowcase. It takes about 30 seconds and the difference in how your hair looks the next morning is real.
