Type 4A Hair: Low Density, Medium Porosity – Your Complete Growth Guide

Type 4A Hair

Low Density · Medium Porosity

Your 4A coils are tight and springy with a defined S-pattern that looks stunning when your hair is happy. Medium porosity is actually a gift. Your cuticle opens for moisture without much fuss and holds onto it for a decent amount of time. The main thing working against you is low density. Fewer strands means less visible volume and every bit of breakage or shedding is more noticeable than it would be on thicker hair. Your routine needs to protect what you have, keep your scalp healthy, and let your coils grow without interference.

How to Grow Your Hair

Keep moisture coming in regularly

Medium porosity means your hair accepts moisture well and that is genuinely a good thing. But 4A coils are still naturally dry because the curl pattern makes it hard for scalp oils to travel down the strand. You need to keep replenishing. Moisturise properly on wash day, refresh in the middle of the week, and do not let your hair go dry for days at a time. When your coils are well hydrated they feel soft, look defined and grow with much less resistance.

Deep condition every wash day

Even with cooperative porosity your 4A coils need a proper deep conditioning session every week. Daily life takes moisture out and one deep condition a week puts it back in. Apply generously in sections, cover with a shower cap and leave for 20 to 30 minutes. You do not need heat as a strict requirement with medium porosity, but a warm towel wrapped around the cap makes a noticeable difference to how soft and defined your coils come out.

Touch your hair as little as possible between washes

Low density hair shows breakage quickly. Every time you pull at your coils when they are dry you risk losing strands you cannot afford to lose right now. Reduce styling between wash days. Protective styles like twist-outs or loose updos held with your Froband give your coils a chance to rest and retain length without constant manipulation. The less you disturb 4A coils when they are dry, the longer they get and the fuller they look over time.

Massage your scalp regularly

With low density you want every follicle producing its strongest possible strand. Scalp massages three or four times a week with a light oil like jojoba or grapeseed increase blood flow to the follicle and that stimulates growth. Five minutes per session is enough. Use the pads of your fingers in slow circular motions and be consistent. You will not see a change overnight but after two or three months the difference in your hair is real.

Detangle slowly on wash day only

4A coils tangle easily at their intersections. On low density hair rushing through a detangle means losing strands you will notice. Always detangle when your hair is completely saturated with conditioner on wash day. Work from the ends upward in sections. Use a wide tooth comb or your fingers and go slowly. Trim every eight to ten weeks so weak ends do not break further up the strand and create more tangles next time.

Sleep with intention

Cotton pillowcases absorb moisture from your coils and roughen the cuticle all night while you sleep. Pineapple your 4A hair loosely at the crown with your Froband before bed and cover with a satin bonnet or sleep on a satin pillowcase. It is a small habit that makes a big difference. Your coils will retain more moisture, stay more defined and break less over time just from this one change.

Products: What Works and What Does Not

Look for these

Moisturising shampoos, hydrating deep conditioners, water-based leave-ins, lightweight curl creams, aloe vera, glycerin, jojoba oil, argan oil, grapeseed oil

Avoid these

Very heavy butters used on their own, silicone-heavy products that build up, excessive heat styling, skipping deep conditioning, manipulating dry coils between wash days
