Type 4A Hair: Medium Density, Medium Porosity – Your Complete Growth Guide

Type 4A Hair

Medium Density · Medium Porosity

Type 4A curls are tight, springy coils with a defined S-pattern that thrive with the right routine. Medium density means you have a good, full head of hair with real volume potential. Medium porosity is the most cooperative porosity level — your cuticle accepts moisture without too much resistance and holds it for a reasonable time. This combination is genuinely one of the more workable 4A profiles. Your job is to maintain consistent moisture, minimise breakage, and let your coils grow without interference.

How to Grow Your Hair

Keep moisture flowing consistently

Medium porosity 4A hair absorbs moisture readily and holds it well, but 4A coils are still inherently dry because the curl pattern prevents scalp oils from travelling down the strand. Moisturise on every wash day without fail, refresh mid-week, and do not let your hair go more than a few days without hydration. Consistency is the foundation of everything. When medium porosity 4A hair is well moisturised it has exceptional definition, bounce, and growth potential.

Deep condition every wash day

Even with cooperative porosity, 4A coils need weekly deep conditioning to replace the moisture that everyday life removes. Use a hydrating conditioner with ingredients like aloe, honey, or panthenol and leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes. You do not need heat as a requirement with medium porosity, but a warm shower cap or steamer will deepen absorption and give noticeably softer, more defined results. Make this the non-negotiable centrepiece of your wash day.

Seal lightly to slow moisture loss

Medium porosity hair lets moisture in well but does not seal it in indefinitely. After your leave-in, apply a lightweight oil like argan, jojoba, or sweet almond to seal the cuticle and slow water evaporation from the strand. Do not skip this step — it is what keeps your 4A coils soft and defined between wash days rather than reverting to dryness by day two or three. A small amount goes a long way on medium density hair.

Scalp massages build on your density

Medium density is a solid foundation that scalp massages can build on meaningfully. Three to four times a week, massage your scalp for five minutes with a lightweight oil using the pads of your fingers in circular motions. Consistent stimulation increases blood flow to each follicle, encouraging stronger and steadier growth. You have enough strands for the results to become very visible over three to six months of regular practice.

Detangle gently on wash day only

4A coils tangle at their intersections and with medium density there are plenty of neighbours for each strand to catch on. Detangle only when hair is fully saturated with conditioner on wash day, working slowly from ends up to roots. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers and divide the hair into sections to make the process manageable. Trim every eight to ten weeks to keep ends clean and reduce future tangling and breakage.

Protect every night with your Froband and satin

Cotton pillowcases rob 4A coils of moisture overnight and rough up the cuticle in a way that creates frizz and disrupts your curl pattern. Pineapple your hair loosely at the crown with your Froband before bed to keep volume and definition intact. Sleep on satin — a bonnet or pillowcase — to protect the strand from friction. This simple habit makes a visible difference to how your coils look and feel every single morning.

Products: What Works and What Does Not

Look for these

Moisturising shampoos, hydrating deep conditioners, water-based leave-ins, lightweight curl creams, aloe vera, glycerin, honey, argan oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil

Avoid these

Skipping deep conditioning, heavy silicone-based products that build up over time, excessive heat styling, dry manipulation between wash days, going more than a week without refreshing moisture

Your Weekly Routine at a Glance

Wash Day

Shampoo, deep condition for 20 to 30 minutes with a warm cap, apply water-based leave-in to wet hair, seal with a light oil, scrunch in curl cream or gel, diffuse on low or air dry.

Mid-Week Refresh

Mist with water or aloe vera spray, scrunch to revive coil definition, seal lightly with oil, re-secure with your Froband and air dry.

Every Night

Pineapple loosely at the crown with your Froband and sleep on satin to lock in moisture and preserve your coil pattern through the night.
