Type 3B Hair: Low Density, High Porosity – Your Complete Growth Guide

Type 3B Hair

Low Density · High Porosity

Type 3B curls are springy, lively ringlets with a tighter pattern and more volume than 3A. When hair is low density and high porosity, you have fewer strands on the scalp and a cuticle that is raised or damaged, absorbing moisture quickly but losing it just as fast. This is one of the more challenging combinations because dryness, frizz, and fragility can all show up at once and are very visible on low density hair. The goal is to lock moisture in, keep the scalp healthy, and handle the hair as gently as possible.

How to Grow Your Hair

Seal moisture in immediately after every wash

High porosity hair needs a sealant applied right after your leave-in conditioner, before the moisture has a chance to escape. Use a light to medium cream followed by a heavier oil or butter to close the cuticle. Castor oil and avocado oil work well as sealants for high porosity hair. Apply everything to soaking wet hair for the best absorption and longest hold.

Protein treatments every two to four weeks

The gaps in the cuticle of high porosity hair allow moisture to escape and leave the strand vulnerable to breakage. Protein fills those gaps and reinforces the structure of each strand. For low density hair this is especially important because every strand counts. Use a gentle protein treatment, not a heavy one, every two to four weeks and alternate it with a nourishing deep conditioning session.

Cool water rinses after every conditioning step

Hot water lifts the cuticle of high porosity hair even further. Always end your wash with cool water to help close the cuticle, smooth the hair surface, and reduce frizz. This is one of the simplest changes you can make and the difference in how your 3B curls look and feel is immediate.

Scalp care with every follicle in mind

With low density, each follicle matters more than it would with thicker hair. Gentle scalp massages with castor oil three to four times a week stimulate blood flow and encourage each follicle to produce the healthiest strand it can. Keep the scalp clean and free from residue by washing weekly and do not skip washes even if your hair looks okay on the outside.

Extremely gentle detangling only

Low density high porosity hair is the most fragile of combinations. Only detangle on wash day when hair is saturated with a slippery conditioner. Use your fingers to work out tangles from the ends upward before reaching for a wide-tooth comb. Never detangle dry hair and avoid heat styling as much as possible to reduce the cumulative damage that leads to breakage.

Satin bonnet every single night

High porosity hair loses moisture very rapidly overnight. A satin bonnet fully encloses your curls and prevents the moisture loss that a pillowcase cannot stop. Pineapple gently with your Froband before covering and you will preserve the spring and definition of your 3B curls through the night without putting any tension on the delicate roots.
