Type 3C Hair: Low Density, High Porosity – Your Complete Growth Guide

Type 3C Hair

Low Density · High Porosity

Type 3C curls are tight, densely packed corkscrews with a strong, defined coil pattern. When hair is low density and high porosity, there are fewer strands on the scalp and each strand has a raised or damaged cuticle that absorbs moisture very quickly but cannot hold it for long. This is the most demanding combination for 3C hair. Dryness is constant, frizz is pervasive, and every strand lost to breakage is visible. The care routine for this combination is focused entirely on sealing moisture in and treating each strand with maximum gentleness.

How to Grow Your Hair

Seal moisture in immediately and thoroughly

High porosity 3C hair needs every step of the LOC or LCO method applied as soon as you step out of the shower. The moisture window is very short. Apply a liquid leave-in first, then a cream to help retain it, then seal with a heavier oil or butter like castor oil, shea butter, or avocado oil. Even with fewer strands, work through sections to make sure nothing is missed.

Protein treatments every two to three weeks

High porosity hair has gaps in the cuticle layer that make it structurally weak and prone to breakage. Protein fills those gaps and strengthens the strand, helping it hold moisture longer and resist snapping. For low density hair, this is especially important because every strand needs to stay healthy and intact. Use a gentle hydrolysed protein treatment and alternate it with your deep conditioning sessions.

Cool water after every wash

Hot water opens the cuticle further on already high porosity hair and accelerates moisture loss. Always finish your wash with cool water to help close the cuticle as much as possible. This reduces frizz, adds shine to your coils, and makes your sealants more effective because the cuticle is partially closed when you apply them.

Protect every follicle

With low density, each follicle contributes more to your overall result than with thicker hair. Scalp massages with castor oil three to four times a week stimulate circulation to every follicle and encourage the healthiest possible growth from each one. Keep your scalp clean and wash weekly without skipping sessions to prevent any build-up that could slow growth.

Maximum gentleness always

This combination is the most fragile for 3C hair. Only detangle on wash day when completely saturated with a slippery conditioner. Finger detangle first, then use a wide-tooth comb from ends to roots. Never detangle dry hair. Avoid heat styling and handle your hair as little as possible between washes. Every rough interaction is a breakage risk you cannot afford with low density hair.

Satin bonnet every night

High porosity hair loses moisture rapidly overnight. A satin bonnet fully protects your coils from both friction and moisture loss in a way a pillowcase cannot. Pineapple your 3C curls very gently at the top with your Froband before covering them, preserving the coil pattern and volume through the night without any stress on the roots.

Products: What Works and What Does Not

Look for these

Castor oil, avocado oil, shea butter, hydrolysed keratin and silk, aloe vera, glycerin, rich leave-ins, moisturising deep conditioners with slip

Avoid these

Light oils without sealing, hot water, heat without protectant, alcohol-based products, skipping protein, dry detangling
