Type 3C Hair
Medium Density · High Porosity
Type 3C curls are tight, defined corkscrews with a naturally voluminous coil pattern. Medium density gives your hair a full, healthy appearance with a good number of strands on the scalp. High porosity means the cuticle has raised edges or gaps, allowing moisture to be absorbed very quickly but also to escape fast. For 3C hair with high porosity, dryness and frizz are persistent without the right sealing routine. The tight coil pattern makes it even harder for natural oils to travel down the strand, compounding the challenge. With the right approach, this combination produces some of the most striking, defined coils of any hair type.

How to Grow Your Hair
Seal moisture in with every single wash
High porosity 3C hair loses moisture faster than almost any other combination because the tight coil pattern and open cuticle work against each other. The LOC or LCO method is essential after every wash. Apply your liquid leave-in immediately after rinsing, follow with a curl cream, and seal with a heavier oil or butter like shea butter, castor oil, or avocado oil. Work section by section through medium density hair to ensure every coil is treated from root to tip.
Protein treatments every two to three weeks
High porosity 3C hair has structural gaps in the cuticle that protein fills temporarily. This makes each strand stronger, better able to hold moisture, and less prone to the snapping that prevents length retention. Use a hydrolysed protein treatment every two to three weeks alternating with your deep conditioning sessions. Look for hydrolysed keratin, silk, or rice protein in the formulas you choose.
Cool rinses close the cuticle
Hot water opens the already raised cuticle of high porosity hair and makes moisture loss even worse. After every wash and conditioning step, finish with a cool water rinse to help close the cuticle. This reduces frizz across your whole head of coils and makes your sealing products more effective because they are being applied to a partially closed cuticle rather than a fully open one.
Scalp massages keep growth steady
Medium density gives you a solid number of follicles to work with and consistent scalp massages keep all of them operating at their best. Use castor oil or a rosemary growth blend, parting your hair in sections to access the scalp directly. Five minutes three to four times a week, every week, is the level of consistency that produces visible results in growth rate and strand strength over months.
Gentle handling only on wash day
High porosity 3C coils break more easily than other types and the tight pattern means they tangle readily. Only detangle on wash day when fully saturated with a slippery conditioner. Use fingers first to work through tangles from ends to roots, then a wide-tooth comb if needed. Avoid any mechanical stress between wash days and limit heat styling to keep the cuticle from deteriorating further.
Satin bonnet every night
High porosity hair loses moisture overnight faster than any other type. A satin bonnet fully encloses your coils and is far more effective than a pillowcase for containing that moisture. Pineapple your 3C curls at the crown with your Froband before covering them. You will wake up with preserved coil definition, manageable frizz, and moisture levels that hold much better through the following days.
Products: What Works and What Does Not
Look for these
Castor oil, shea butter, avocado oil, hydrolysed keratin and silk proteins, aloe vera, glycerin, rich leave-ins, nourishing deep conditioners with slip
Avoid these
Light oils used alone without sealing, hot water, heat without protectant, alcohol-based products, skipping protein, rough or dry handling
Your Weekly Routine at a Glance
Wash Day
Shampoo gently, deep condition in sections 20 to 30 minutes, LOC method section by section, cool rinse, diffuse on low or air dry.
Mid-Week Refresh
Mist lightly, reseal ends with a small amount of oil or butter, re-secure with your Froband.
Every Night
