Medium Density · High Porosity
Your complete personalised growth guide
Medium density gives your 4A coils presence and body, which is a real advantage. The challenge in your profile comes from high porosity, where your cuticles are raised and open, absorbing moisture quickly but losing it just as fast. The combination means your hair can feel soft right after wash day and noticeably dry within twenty-four hours. Understanding why this happens is the first step to changing it, and with the right approach your coils can stay moisturised, defined and healthy for days at a time.
Understanding High Porosity in Depth
High porosity can be something you were born with or something that developed over time through heat, chemical treatments or environmental stress. Either way, the effect is the same: your cuticles do not close properly, which means moisture escapes almost as fast as it enters. With medium density, you have more strands experiencing this, which is why your hair can feel consistently thirsty no matter how much product you use. The solution is not more product. It is better sealing.
The Sealing and Protein Strategy
Every wash day needs to end with a proper sealing step. After your leave-in, apply a medium to rich butter or cream, then seal with a heavier oil such as castor, avocado or olive oil. This layering creates a barrier that slows down moisture evaporation significantly. The LCO method, liquid then cream then oil, is particularly effective for high porosity hair because each layer adds protection on top of the last.
Incorporate a light protein treatment into your routine every three to four weeks. High porosity hair often lacks structural integrity alongside moisture, and protein helps strengthen the shaft so it can hold onto hydration more effectively. Follow every protein treatment with a deep moisture session to keep the balance right.
Your Wash Day Routine
Use a creamy, moisturising shampoo and avoid anything with sulphates. High porosity hair is already prone to dryness and a stripping shampoo makes the problem significantly worse. Deep condition with a rich, penetrating formula for at least twenty to thirty minutes every wash day without exception. Finish with a cool water rinse to encourage the cuticle to close slightly before you begin styling.
Work your LCO layers through each section while your hair is still soaking wet. With medium density, sectioning is important to make sure every strand gets fully covered, particularly the inner layers that are easy to miss when you are working quickly.
Keeping Moisture Through the Week
Protective and low-manipulation styles are your best tools between wash days. Twists, braids and bantu knots reduce daily friction and lock moisture inside the strand for longer. Refreshing each morning with a light water and leave-in mist helps restore what overnight dryness takes away. A satin bonnet or pillowcase at night is essential, not optional, for high porosity hair.
Where Frobands Come In
High porosity hair is particularly vulnerable to friction damage because the cuticle is already compromised. Every rub against a rough elastic or tight band at the hairline creates more of the damage that raises porosity further. A Froband eliminates that friction entirely, sitting gently against the hairline without gripping or pulling. For medium density 4A hair with high porosity, protecting your edges with a Froband is one of the most practical things you can do to support long-term retention.
