Type 3A Hair: Medium Density, High Porosity – Your Complete Growth Guide

Type 3A Hair

Medium Density · High Porosity

Type 3A curls form large, loose ringlets with natural bounce and definition. Medium density gives your hair a visibly full look with a healthy number of strands. High porosity means your cuticle is raised or has gaps, so it soaks up moisture quickly but cannot hold on to it for long. This combination often feels dry and frizzy despite regular conditioning and can be prone to breakage if not handled carefully. The good news is that medium density means you have enough hair to work with and the right routine makes a significant difference quickly.

How to Grow Your Hair

Seal moisture in with every wash

High porosity hair needs a sealant after every conditioning step or the moisture evaporates before it can do any good. After applying your leave-in conditioner, follow immediately with a cream and then a heavier oil to lock everything in. Castor oil, avocado oil, and shea butter all work well as sealants for high porosity hair. Do this while your hair is still dripping wet for the best result.

Use protein treatments every two to four weeks

High porosity hair has gaps in the cuticle that let moisture escape. Protein fills those gaps and temporarily reinforces the strand, helping it hold moisture better and resist breakage. Alternate protein treatments with your deep conditioning sessions rather than doing both at the same time. Look for hydrolysed keratin, hydrolysed silk, or egg-based treatments for the best results.

Always finish with a cool rinse

Hot water opens the cuticle even further on high porosity hair, which makes moisture retention even harder. After washing and conditioning, do a final rinse with cool water to help close the cuticle as much as possible. It also adds shine and reduces frizz noticeably, especially on 3A curl patterns.

Scalp massages to maximise growth

With medium density, you have a solid number of follicles to work with. Regular scalp massages with castor oil or a rosemary growth blend keep those follicles stimulated and producing healthy strands. Five minutes three to four times a week is the sweet spot. Be consistent over months rather than expecting overnight results.

Handle gently to prevent breakage

High porosity hair breaks more easily than other types, especially when dry. Only detangle on wash day when the hair is saturated with conditioner. Use your fingers first, then a wide-tooth comb starting from the ends and working upward. Avoid heat styling as much as you can and always use a heat protectant and low temperatures when you do.

Protect every night without fail

High porosity hair loses moisture rapidly overnight. A satin bonnet is the most effective solution as it fully encloses your hair. Pineapple your curls at the top with your Froband before putting on your bonnet so you wake up with preserved curl pattern and volume without any tension on the roots.
