Type 3B Hair: Low Density, Low Porosity – Your Complete Growth Guide

Type 3B Hair

Low Density · Low Porosity

Type 3B curls are springy, defined ringlets with high volume and a tight spiral pattern. They sit somewhere between a loose curl and a corkscrew and have a lot of personality. When your hair is low density, you have fewer strands on the scalp, which can make the hair appear thinner despite the springiness of your curl pattern. Low porosity means the cuticle is tightly sealed and resists absorbing moisture. Products tend to sit on the surface rather than penetrating, and build-up can become an issue quickly. The key with this combination is getting moisture in and keeping the scalp clear.

How to Grow Your Hair

Use heat to open the cuticle

Low porosity 3B hair needs warmth to let anything in. Apply your conditioner and leave-in to hair that is freshly washed and still warm from the water. A weekly steam session or 15 to 20 minutes under a hooded dryer with your deep conditioner makes a significant difference in how soft and hydrated your curls feel. Without heat, products will consistently sit on top no matter how good they are.

Choose lightweight, water-based products

Heavy formulas will not absorb into low porosity hair and will weigh down your 3B curls, making them lose their spring and definition. Water-based leave-ins, aloe vera gels, and lightweight curl milks are the most effective choices. Look for glycerin, aloe vera juice, and rice water in the ingredients list. Apply everything while hair is wet to maximise absorption.

Clarify every two to four weeks

Low porosity hair holds on to residue and with low density there is less hair to spread it across, meaning build-up concentrates on the scalp more quickly. Clarify regularly to keep follicles clear and prevent the sluggish growth that comes from a congested scalp. Always follow with a nourishing deep conditioner to restore moisture immediately after.

Scalp massages three to four times a week

With fewer strands on the scalp, it is important that every follicle is functioning well. Regular scalp massages with jojoba or grapeseed oil increase blood flow to the follicles and stimulate growth consistently over time. Five minutes per session is enough. The light oils absorb well into low porosity scalps without causing build-up.

Handle gently to retain length

Low density hair shows every sign of damage. Split ends, thinning, and breakage are all very visible when there are fewer strands to absorb the impact. Detangle gently on wash day only, wear protective styles between wash days, and trim every eight to ten weeks to keep your ends clean and your hair looking its best as it grows.

Satin every night for curl preservation

Cotton causes friction and absorbs moisture, both of which are damaging for 3B curls. Switch to a satin pillowcase or bonnet at night. Pineapple your curls loosely at the top with your Froband to maintain the spiral definition and keep volume at the roots without any tension on the scalp.
