Type 3B Hair
Medium Density · Low Porosity
Type 3B curls are springy, voluminous ringlets with a well-defined pattern. Medium density gives your hair a healthy, full look with a good amount of strands on the scalp. Low porosity means the cuticle is tightly sealed, resisting moisture absorption and causing products to sit on top of the hair rather than penetrating. This combination gives you hair that looks great but can feel stubbornly dry. Once you learn how to open that cuticle, everything changes.

How to Grow Your Hair
Heat is your best friend for moisture
Low porosity hair simply will not absorb products without a little help from warmth. Make steam treatments or hooded dryer sessions a weekly habit. Apply your deep conditioner and leave-in to warm, freshly washed hair and the cuticle will lift just enough to let moisture in. The difference between products applied cold and applied warm is dramatic for this hair type.
Water-based products only at the roots
Heavy butters and thick creams will not penetrate low porosity hair and will build up at the scalp, blocking follicles and slowing growth. Always choose water-based leave-ins and lightweight gels. Save any richer creams or butters for the ends only where the hair is drier and older. Glycerin, aloe vera juice, and rice water are your most effective moisturising ingredients.
Clarify every two to three weeks
Build-up is a persistent issue for low porosity hair and medium density means there is enough hair to accumulate product residue at a steady pace. A clarifying shampoo every two to three weeks clears the scalp and hair shaft, restoring your curls' ability to absorb moisture properly. Always follow with a deep conditioning treatment to replenish what the clarifying shampoo stripped.
Consistent scalp massages
Medium density gives you a solid base of follicles to work with. Keep all of them stimulated and active with regular scalp massages. Use jojoba or grapeseed oil, which both absorb well into low porosity hair without contributing to build-up. Five minutes of massage three to four times a week, every week, is the kind of consistency that delivers visible growth results over months.
Protective styles between wash days
3B curls are prone to tangling and frizz when left loose between wash days. Protective styles like loose twists, a bun, or a braid protect your ends from friction and reduce the daily manipulation that leads to breakage. The less you handle your hair between washes, the more length you will retain over time.
Protect at night with satin
Even though low porosity hair holds moisture well once it is inside the strand, overnight friction still causes frizz and disrupts your curl pattern. A satin pillowcase or bonnet prevents this. Pineapple your 3B curls loosely at the top with your Froband before bed and your spirals will be much easier to refresh in the morning with minimal product.
