Type 3C Hair
Medium Density · Medium Porosity
Type 3C curls are tight, voluminous corkscrews with a striking, well-defined coil pattern. Medium density gives your hair a healthy, full appearance with a good number of strands. Medium porosity means your cuticle is balanced, absorbing moisture well and retaining it without too much effort. This is one of the most rewarding 3C combinations to care for. Your hair responds consistently to a good routine, the coil definition is naturally strong, and with regular moisture and length retention habits, your hair can grow impressively long while maintaining its beautiful pattern.

How to Grow Your Hair
Build a consistent routine and stick with it
Medium porosity hair above all else needs consistency. Your cuticle is balanced and will respond well to almost any good quality product as long as you use it regularly. The biggest gains in growth and length retention come from doing the same solid routine week after week rather than constantly switching products. Pick a shampoo, deep conditioner, leave-in, and styling product that work and commit to them for at least a month before evaluating.
Deep condition every wash day in sections
3C coils have tighter bends than any other type 3 pattern, which means natural oils from the scalp rarely reach the ends. Deep conditioning replaces what cannot travel down the strand naturally. Apply generously in sections, cover with a cap, and leave on for 20 to 30 minutes. Your coils will emerge more elastic, more defined, and far less prone to breakage after every session.
Monthly light protein to maintain strength
Medium porosity hair benefits from light monthly protein to keep strands strong and resilient. For 3C hair specifically, strong strands hold the coil pattern better and spring back more readily after washing. Use a gentle protein treatment once a month and alternate it with your regular deep conditioning. If your hair feels stiff after protein, ease off and add a moisture-focused session before trying again.
Scalp massages three to four times a week
Medium density gives you a healthy number of follicles and regular scalp massages keep them all producing strongly. Use a nourishing oil like jojoba, sweet almond, or a rosemary growth blend. Work through the scalp in sections to reach every follicle rather than just massaging the top layer. Five minutes per session, three to four times a week, done without skipping for months at a time, is what produces visible results in growth rate.
Reduce manipulation to retain length
3C coils are tighter and more prone to tangling than looser types. Every time you touch your hair between wash days, there is a risk of breakage at the ends. Wear your coils out on wash day and the day after, then move into a protective style for the rest of the week. A bun, loose twists, or a pineapple secured with your Froband all keep your ends protected and your breakage to a minimum.
Satin every night without exception
Cotton disrupts 3C coil definition and absorbs moisture even from medium porosity hair overnight. A satin pillow or bonnet protects both. Pineapple your coils with your Froband before bed and your pattern will refresh with minimal effort the next morning. This single habit, done consistently every night, makes a significant long-term difference to how your hair looks and retains length.
